Use the Thesaurus

A thesaurus lists all subject terms in a database alphabetically and shows their relationship to similar terms. Narrower terms are more specific; broader terms are more general

Use the thesaurus to identify what subject terms can be searched in the database
Example: Human rights - Use: Civil rights [APAIS thesaurus]

  • Select the Thesaurus link on Advanced Search screen page

 

To browse:

  • Select a thesaurus from Select Thesauri drop-down list
  • Click the first letter of the search term you want
  • Scan the list of results for that letter, arranged in three columns: TermNarrower TermsBroader Terms
  • Click the most relevant subject
  • Click Search subject term

 

To search exact subject terms:

  • Enter the term in Search box
  • Select Include term variations check box to include similar terms [optional]
  • Click Search thesaurus
  • Select the check box for search terms you want
  • Click Search checked terms

 

Note:
Not all databases contain a thesaurus
Thesauri are only available from Advanced Search screen
Each thesaurus in any database is unique to that database
