Name of the Number, The

The Name of the Number is the second book in The Emergence of Number series. It looks at the history and anthropology of the ways in which numbers have been expressed throughout the ages and across different cultures dealing with the different languages of the world, the different ways that number representation has been structured, the history and prehistory of number concepts, the ways in which numerical representation (in word and symbol) and their evolvution over time.

These themes are explored via the ways in which number-concepts have been expressed in language by different cultures in many different places and at many different times. The work concludes with a description of four projects that allow the further investigation of aspects of this material.
