Into The Mix People, Places, Processes: Proceedings of the 2014 IASPM-ANZ Conference

The Australia-New Zealand branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) held its annual regional conference at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, from 5 to 7 December 2014.

The theme of the 2014 conference was “Into the Mix”. The “mix” was both literal (referring to various stages in the production of popular music, as well as important creative processes such as sampling, remixing and DJing) and an analogy for all types of musical hybridities and encounters, the fluid nature of musical meanings and experiences, and the fluidity or movement of ideas, sounds and peoples. The notion of the “mix” was defined broadly, involving popular music production processes, creative settings, and other spaces where people, places and processes are foregrounded as part of interpretive cultural analysis. Papers were considered that addressed specifically the theme of the conference in connection with one or more of its broad definitions.
