Future That Works, A

Although Australia's official unemployment rate has now fallen to around 5.5 percent, the notion that the Australian economy is somewhere near full employment is easily challenged. At the same time, our society faces increasing pressure from depletion of natural resources and degradation of air, land and water. This challenge of achieving an economy that delivers full employment at the same time as sound and sustainable environmental outcomes has not yet been adequately addressed by policy makers.

A Future That Works is collection of selected refereed papers that were presented at A Future That Works: Economics, Employment and the Environment conference, which was held from 8-10 December 2004 at the University of Newcastle. This volume aims to develop the nexus between labour market issues and environmental issues to advance the debate about social and environmental sustainability.
